Paying for community college

As a community college student in Arizona, I think about the different types of people who attend GCC. From kids straight out of high school. To parents going back to school to get a degree. This is what makes a community college special: the ability for anyone to come and get a degree. In the United states there are 15 states that offer free community college. Arizona is not one of those states. States like North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, California, and many others. By giving students the ability to extend their education we are benefiting our economy.

Our economy benefits greatly from having more people with degrees. A website called best colleges gives great reasons on how free college helps america. “We also know widespread degree attainment benefits society as a whole. Because degree-holders earn more, they pay more taxes. They are also less likely to rely on government support such as unemployment benefits, Medicaid, and housing subsidies, to name a few.” (Drozdowski). More people paying taxes and less people relying on the government. That's bettering the economy.

Another reason why community college should be free. Our country will be better educated. Giving every student an opportunity to further their education. One of the biggest problems America faces is giving everyone an equal opportunity at college tuition. Best colleges talks about, “This barrier remains especially problematic for low-income, underrepresented minority, and first-generation students, all of whom have comparatively low degree attainment rates”.(Drozdowski). Providing opportunities for everyone to get a degree should be a priority. Families who have not had a college graduate because they cannot afford it goes away. This can change a family's history.

  1. I agree in that college education should be free as people would be more likely to further their education if it was more accessible. Because college leaves its students tens of thousands of dollars in debt, the idea can be unrealistic to those that don't have the money. Making college more accessible would give people more chances for equal opportunity.

  2. I believe that community college should be free as well, I feel like more people would further their education. With tution already being somewhat high it can make schooling less attainable.

  3. I agree with you because if community college was free there would be more opportunities for people. Most kids and adults decide not to go to college because of the cost, with rent and the cost of living is rising. The individuals want to further their education and better themselves but it is inaccessible. The government should see how this can better their economy, the economy helps them and they help in return too.
